School Support Services

Your child's wellbeing is a top priority at Harris Academy Ockendon.  Students are given opportunities to develop as effective, independent learners both academically and socially.  To enable our students to grow we look to support them in becoming resilient, self-motivated, attentive, open-minded, inquisitive, respectful, polite and driven.

We have a range of provisions in place to ensure the physical and emotional welfare of each child is met.  We base our successful pastoral care system on tried and tested methods that mean each student is safe, happy, involved in academy life and able to perform to their full potential.

There is a strong pastoral team who work closely with parents to ensure all families are supported.  The Assistant Principal for behaviour and safeguarding is responsible for this important aspect of academy life and works closely with Achievement Leaders and Pastoral Managers for all matters relating to personal development, safeguarding and pastoral care.

We are aware that some students require additional emotional support so we make pastoral care a priority.  We seek to bring a common-sense approach to our students' needs.  Our team strongly believes in boundaries, consistency and ensuring students know the choices available to them.

To ensure our community understand this we have a universal offer which includes teaching a safeguarding curriculum; including British Values, relationships, health and wellbeing, current affairs assemblies, guest speakers on contextual topics and a clear scholarly work ethic where we focus on working hard, being kind, and taking responsibility.

We value parental views and believe that good communication lies at the heart of a child's development.  Our staff are well-informed and always mindful of individual abilities and character.  Lessons and enrichment are pivotal in helping to develop a toolkit of opportunities.

There are times when children may need someone to talk to; this is actively encouraged.  Our Pastoral Team are on hand daily to deal with any issues or concerns your child may have.  We also have a counsellor and mindfulness coach for students who are facing challenges that require more in-depth guidance.
