The Harris Academy Ockendon Learning Centres
The four learning centres will create a culture of collaboration and positive professional dialogue delivering a curriculum that builds on prior learning, deepens knowledge and enhances skills that foster learning and achievement.
The carefully considered curriculum intent and sophisticated organisation and sequencing of learning within the subjects will elevate students beyond the context of their lives and experiences. Freeing students from the limitations of their experience will help them go beyond, and sometimes resist, the cultural forces that they experience every day.
The academic year will be organised to allow for 4 deeper learning opportunities, with the timetable suspended at key points to ensure greater flexibility in gaining new experiences. This can be organised for selected teaching groups, cross phase groups or year groups. The curriculum will be planned by the individual Learning Centres. The pre-agreed themes will also embrace every opportunity to embed the academy values.
Over the year, each Learning Centre will also contribute to the weekly ‘Insights’ programme. ‘Insights’ are seminars which provide students with the opportunity to learn more about studying particular subjects at university and/or to stimulate curiosity and openness around specific careers. Each ‘Insight’ will follow a similar format: Overview, Active Seminar, Careers and Preparation.
