Modern Foreign Languages *
Nelson Mandela once said “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
We want students to acquire powerful knowledge that will unlock curiosity and empathy for other cultures and communities and give them the ability to communicate successfully with the world around them
The aim of the MFL Department is to provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation, to inspire, and to provide pupils with a real thirst and passion for learning languages. We stimulate pupils' interest using challenging material and work hard to ensure that all pupils enjoy the lessons and become independent learners.
At HAOC, pupils develop the skills which will enable them to understand written and spoken French or Spanish and to use the language effectively. In addition, we aim to promote an interest in the culture of countries where French or Spanish is spoken and to foster an understanding of different cultures and traditions, as well as tolerance of other communities and beliefs in a global society.
We teach using the EPI (Extensive Processing Instruction) method, based on research by current linguistic experts such as Gianfranco Conti, Steve Smith and Dylan Viñales. Our curriculum is structured around the three pillars of language learning; Phonics, Vocabulary and Grammar and the interplay between them. We have designed a curriculum that builds on student’s prior knowledge and allows them to develop the skills to communicate effectively, moving towards independence in the skills of writing and speaking through their language learning journey.
