We are deeply committed to supporting the whole development of every student, academically, emotionally, and socially. Our Relationship, Health and Sex Education (RHSE) and Personal Development curriculum are essential components of this commitment and play a vital role in preparing students for life beyond the classroom.
A Curriculum for Life
RHSE and Personal Development are designed to equip students with the powerful knowledge and real-life skills they need to lead happy, safe, healthy and successful lives. The curriculum provides students with age-appropriate information and guidance to help them:
- Make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing
- Form and maintain healthy relationships
- Understand and respect diversity and inclusion
- Navigate the digital world responsibly
- Engage with and contribute positively to their community
- Prepare for the demands and responsibilities of adult life
Building Character and Confidence
We believe that every student should leave school with the ability to thrive in a complex and rapidly changing world. That’s why our curriculum goes beyond the statutory requirements, offering a broad, engaging programme that encourages curiosity, self-awareness, critical thinking, and resilience.
At the heart of our RHSE and Personal Development offer are the principles outlined in "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" by Sean Covey. These habits form a strong foundation for developing leadership, self-discipline, empathy, and goal-setting, qualities that empower our students to be the best versions of themselves.
What RHSE & Personal Development Looks Like at HAOC
Our curriculum has been planned in line with statutory guidance, and is carefully structured across key stages to ensure relevance and progression:
- Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9): Students receive a full term of RHSE alongside 10 sessions of Personal Development that take place during two separate weeks over the course of the year, featuring interactive workshops, guest speakers, and enrichment experiences.
- Year 10: Students take part in a full term of RHSE and benefit from 5 sessions of Personal Development that take place during one week over the course of the year tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities of this important GCSE year.
- Year 11: A focused term of RHSE helps students reflect on their values, relationships, and aspirations as they prepare for life after school.
- Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form): Students revisit RHSE in a more mature context and take part in 10 sessions of Personal Development that take place during two separate weeks over the course of the year each year, focusing on independence, leadership, and life beyond the academy.
Real-World Learning
Our curriculum is contextualised to meet the specific needs of our students and our community. By engaging with real-world scenarios, national campaigns, and local issues, students are empowered to think critically and respond meaningfully to the challenges around them. This includes learning how to stay safe online, how to manage mental health, how to build positive relationships, and how to spot and challenge injustice.
