Citizenship *
Citizenship equips students with essential knowledge about society, law, and democracy, preparing them to be informed and active citizens.
It is more than a subject—it helps shape knowledgeable, responsible individuals ready to participate in society. The course is designed to gain different citizenship insights and appreciate different perspectives on how we live together and make decisions in society.
Citizenship study will enable learners to deepen their knowledge of democracy and government, the law, their rights and responsibilities and how we live together in society. Students will know what a democracy is and be able to explain how parliamentary democracy operates within the UK and compare it to non-democratic systems beyond the UK. They will explore the relationship between the citizen and the state with an emphasis on explaining the rights and responsibilities of living and working in the UK. Students will investigate the role of the law in society; how laws are made, influenced and enforced via our justice system. The course investigates how national economic and financial policies are created, enacted and their impact on UK citizens.
The study of Citizenship enables students to think critically, evaluate evidence, debate ideas, make persuasive arguments and justify their conclusions. Its study allows students to acquire the skills and knowledge to become responsible citizens who play an active and positive role in public and democratic life. Students will research citizenship issues and actions, analyse and evaluate information as well as interpreting sources of evidence. Students will use their knowledge to participate in debates, showing an understanding of different viewpoints, making persuasive and reasoned arguments and justifying a sustained conclusion. They will be encouraged to think deeply and critically about a wide range of political, social, economic and ethical issues and questions facing society in both a local and global context.
