Miss Janganant, Pastoral Manager, Year 7

Janganant aMiss Janganant has worked in education for many years supporting and coaching students to inspire, motivate and achieve their goals.

Coming from a long and successful career in the Business Banking and Finance sector, she made the transition into education and won an Education Award in her first year.  Following this she undertook a Diploma in Education and Training and taught Finance to sixth form students for over three years.

In her role as Pastoral Manager Miss Janganant supports students in year 7 alongside their achievement leader Mr Mann. As part of the pastoral team, she manages attendance, supervises study periods, and focuses on pastoral issues and wellbeing.

Miss Janganant is also the academy co-ordinator for the ‘Make Happen’ programme, the Mindfulness in Schools lead.

Miss Janganant has a keen interest in mindfulness and emotional wellbeing and has practised mindfulness and meditation for over 10 years, including teaching this at an adult college in her spare time.  She has trained with the Mindfulness in School Project (MiSP) and is qualified to deliver their signature Mindfulness Programmes to students aged 11-18. 

Her love of teaching and training combined with her passion for continued learning, and interests in meditation and mindfulness have enabled her to empower others and show how the benefits of having a mindful practice can really bring a sense of calm and peace to one’s life.

Mrs Davison, Pastoral Manager, Year 8

Mrs Davison started working at Harris Academy Ockendon in 2013, known then as The Ockendon Academy as a Teaching Assistant, where she was pivotal in supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in small intervention groups as well in the classroom.

She grew up in the local community studying at The Ockendon School and Palmer’s Sixth Form College. She is currently studying through The Open University towards a BA in History.

In her role as Pastoral Manager Mrs Davison supports students in Year 8 alongside their achievement leader Mrs Tucker. As part of the pastoral team, she manages attendance, behaviour and focuses on pastoral issues and student wellbeing.  She works hard to develop and maintain positive relationships with the students in her year group as well as their families and external agencies.

Throughout her career she has gained a wide range of qualifications and is ambitious for not only herself but all the students she works with. She is passionate about providing all students with a positive school experience and helping them to be happy and successful.

Mrs Laybourn-Morris, Pastoral Manager, Year 9

Mrs Laybourn-Morris began working at the academy in 2016 as an Attendance Officer and worked closely with students and families.

She has always lived in the local area attending William Edwards Secondary School and Thurrock Technical College.  From there she progressed to a long career as a Criminal Defence Legal Secretary for 15 years.

As Pastoral Manager for Year 9, she supports students alongside their Achievement Leader Mr Mutch.  As part of the pastoral team, she manages attendance, behaviour and focuses on pastoral issues and student wellbeing.  She works hard to develop and maintain good positive relationships with the students in her year group along with families and external agencies.  She also works closely with the safeguarding team and SEND department.

Throughout her career she has gained Level 2 Safeguarding qualification and is fully First Aid trained. 

Mrs Laybourn-Morris actively promotes the academy values of ‘work hard, be kind, take responsibility’, helping students to have a happy and positive experience during their time at Harris Academy Ockendon.

Mr Warren, Pastoral Manager, Year 10

Myles warren

Mr Warren brought with him to HAOC, over 9 years’ experience working in behavioural and pastoral roles as well as 15 years’ experience working with young people through coaching sports.

After studying Sports Coaching at the University of Roehampton Mr Warren continued to coach football, at both youth and adult levels and currently holds UEFA B coaching license.

His career in education led him to work closely with students who have SEND and behavioural needs, gaining experience working in the London and Kent areas supporting these students from a range of different backgrounds.

As the Pastoral Manager for year 10, Mr Warren is there to support students alongside their Achievement Leader Miss Barr. Within the pastoral team, he focuses on pastoral issues and wellbeing to support students with their self-esteem and ensure this impacts positively on their academic and social journey.  He also manages the attendance and behavioural needs of the year group.

Mr Warren is passionate about improving behaviour and promoting inclusion, to inspire positive perspectives and enable others to build long lasting behaviours that will improve their ability to maintain their mental fitness.

He sees great importance in building positive relationships and working closely with parents and carers to create the best possible solutions and habits for each student. 

Mrs Howard, Pastoral Team Leader, and Pastoral Manager for Year 11

Howard rMrs Howard studied at The Ockendon Academy, and Palmers College, going on to gain a BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature via The Open University, and the NPQLBC (National Professional Qualification in Leading Behaviour and Culture).

Her role within the academy is Pastoral Team Leader, as well as Pastoral Manager for year 11.  She supports Yr 11 alongside their Achievement Leader Mr Moreland, and Vice Principal Mr Sofianos.

As part of the Pastoral team she contributes to the development, planning and implementation of strategies such as attendance, safeguarding, and behaviour management, with a specific personal interest in supporting students' emotional wellbeing. She is committed to encouraging the physical, intellectual and emotional development of her students to encourage and aid them to achieve their full potential. 

Mrs Howard actively upholds the Academy’s values of ambition, discipline and honesty, promoting the mission of ‘Enjoying being the best you can be’ whilst encouraging a ‘can do attitude’ amongst the students. 

As a Pastoral Team Leader she has expert knowledge and training in safeguarding and child protection guidance and policies, and ensures these are implemented and followed at all times.

She develops and maintains links within the community outside school, ensuring professional relationships are formed with other agencies where needed, whilst also promoting partnership with parents and carers in order to support the students in their school journey. 

Mrs Howard works hard to build positive trusting relationships with students in her year group, doing this with professionalism and plenty of humour!

Mr Bertram, Pastoral Manager, Sixth Form

Rohen bertram

Mr Bertram attended the academy as a student where he contributed whole-heartedly to the ethos of 'Be the best you can be'.  Growing up in the local community he then went on to Palmers College and South Essex College to further his knowledge in Business Management. 

Mr Bertram started his pastoral career in his home Church in East Ham and has worked with different organisations such as Box Up Crime, and Y4C, supporting young people between the ages of 15-19 years.

He has successfully completed a number of accredited youth related courses and programmes and is a qualified youth and safeguarding worker.  Mr Bertram is currently studying through The Open University towards a BA in Criminology and Youth Work. 

In his role as Pastoral Manager, Mr Bertram supports our Sixth Form students in Year 12 and 13,  alongside the Second in Charge of Sixth Form Dr Von Der Goltz, and Head of Sixth Form Miss Dean.   Mr Bertram is focused on supporting students to be ambitious and to strive for the most aspirational destinations, all the while managing their attendance, wellbeing, and behaviour to ensure they become the very best versions of themselves, as they prepare for their next steps, be that university, apprenticeships, or employment.
