Happy Vaisakhi to all celebrating. Vaisakhi not only symbolises the harvest festival but also the birth of the Khalsa Panth. It marks a pivotal moment in Sikh history when Guru Gobind Singh Ji founded the Khalsa, instilling principles of courage, equality, and selfless service. pic.twitter.com/oN2bgMrx3B

Rewards and Sanctions

Rewards

At Harris Academy Ockendon, we believe it is important to recognise and celebrate the achievements of all students who behave well and who work hard.  We believe that good behaviour is best promoted and developed in young people by drawing attention to and rewarding exemplary behaviour.

The academy recognises that praise can be both public and private, and that all students are entitled to be recognised positively and to have the right to taste success.

The academy operates a hierarchical rewards system rewarding and recognising students for their achievements in the following areas:

  • Academic achievement
  • Behaviour and manners
  • Contribution to the academy
  • Effort
  • Being an academy ambassador
  • High quality classwork and homework

The academy maintains an electronic log of all reward data. Each different type of reward is associated with a number of points which students can collect. The academy has a range of opportunities to celebrate our students’ achievements. These include:

  • Certificates
  • Postcards
  • Positive phone calls home
  • Reward trips and experiences
  • House and achievement points
  • Shout outs in assembly
  • Celebration shields/badges.

Students are also rewarded through subject departments - Bromcom achievement points are awarded for a range of positive behaviours linking to progress, achievement and personal development.  The achievement points correlate to House points, so students not only get rewarded themselves but also benefit the House they are placed in.

Sanctions

At Harris Academy Ockendon we make it clear that unsatisfactory behaviour will not be ignored or tolerated. We recognise that young people will make mistakes and on occasions may behave unsatisfactorily.

We believe that appropriate boundaries and positive habits of behaviour can be reinforced through the application of timely and proportionate sanctions.

Sanctions are not purely punitive but also provide guidance and an opportunity to self-reflect and learn from their mistakes, so they can make positive changes in order for unsatisfactory behaviour to not be repeated. Additionally, students have the opportunities to repair any harm caused.

Staff may sanction a student if they misbehave, act unsafely, break an academy rule or fail to follow a reasonable instruction.

Relationships are at the heart of our work, therefore the restoration and repair of broken or damaged relationships following an incident of unacceptable behaviour is essential and the academy ensures that time and appropriate weight is given to restoring relationships.
